PONANT expands onboard Wi-Fi to the North Pole

by Rose White

PONANT has announced the addition of Starlink network, provided by Marlink, to its existing service, guaranteeing guests quality Wi-Fi access anywhere in the world and whatever the conditions.

This enhanced complimentary service adds another dimension to the on-board experience while also further improving operations and navigation.

“With Starlink, our guests enjoy high-speed WiFi access even in the most remote regions of the planet. Indeed, Le Commandant Charcot was the first vessel to test Starlink antennas at the geographic North Pole,” explains Benoît Carassou-Maillan, Chief Guest Experience & Product Officer at PONANT.

“As experts in exploration cruises, we offer exceptional itineraries, and this new totally free facility is part of our commitment to provide the best quality service to our guests anytime and anywhere in the world”.

Operated by SpaceX and provided by Marlink, the Starlink constellation numbers 6,000 satellites deployed in low-level orbit for faster connections and lower latency. Connecting via Starlink means guests can access the internet, stay in contact with loved ones and share memories of their voyage.

The Starlink network increases the bandwidth available and the geographic coverage of the main VSAT network operated via geostationary satellites. Collaboration between the ship’s bridge and the technical team, and the teams ashore is transparent and guarantees more efficient navigation.

The whole PONANT fleet was fitted with the equipment required during 2023.
